How to Fix Credit

by Wendy Black Polisi on September 24, 2009

There is a lot of confusion about how to fix credit, especially if you are considering doing it yourself. Many people think that they need to hire a credit repair company, but this isn’t always the case. There are many times that you can fix credit fast on your own.

One of most empowering things you can do for yourself is to learn how to fix credit on your own. Doing so allows you to maintain control over your credit instead of relying on someone else to fix your credit for you. One of the best parts of learning how to fix credit on your own is that you can employ tactics that other people can’t!

Most reputable credit repair companies simply focus on disputing derogatory credit for you. While this can be a valuable service if you aren’t willing to take the time to do it yourself, the reality is that this is something you can do on your own for free! All you need is a copy of your credit report and some form letters.

What many people don’t understand about credit repair is that establishing good new positive credit is just as important as cleaning up your bad credit history. And – no one can get new credit for you! So, as you are cleaning up bad credit, you should also be implementing a strategic plan to establish new accounts. The key is – of course—to use your new credit responsibly!

If you are looking to learn how to fix credit, you probably have had some credit issues in the past. This means that you need to look at the causes of these problems and address any underlying issues.

Do you need to be more careful about budgeting? Are you overextended on credit cards and need to look at how you can make additional income? Or do you simply overspend and need to learn money saving ideas? All of these things should be considered when fixing bad credit. (After all, what is the point in fixing your credit if you are going to get right back in the same situation!?)

While repairing your credit is not an easy process and there is often no fast credit fix, learning to fix credit on your own will most likely yield a higher score in the long run because only you can implement a comprehensive strategy that addresses all angles of your finances.
