How To Stop Repossession!

by Vincent Polisi on July 8, 2010

Losing anything is bad enough but losing your primary means of transportation when least expected due to repossession is a nightmare. There are a myriad of ways that we will discuss on how you can stop repossession. Every lender is different and some of these  methods to stop car repossession may not work across the board with all lenders, but they are worth a shot.

The first thing you have to realize is that lenders are not in the repossession business and do not want to repossess the vehicle. That being said, they also are not in the business to lose money.  Lenders are in the collecting interest and profitability business. So, their primary goal is to keep a loan in good standing. If that isn’t possible, the secondary goal is to work to get the loan in good standing. And, if all else fails, the final goal is to get their collateral back (the vehicle) so they can minimize their loss. Despite what you may think, there is no money to be made in repossessing vehicles……………unless you are the repo man.

So, how do you stop repossessions?

  1. First and foremost, the ideal situation is to avoid it all together by paying the car loan on time. (I know, I am a genius, right?)
  2. If you cannot pay the loan on time, as with any defaulted or late payment, the NUMBER ONE thing you can do to avoid problems and stop foreclosure is simply this: COMMUNICATE!!!
  3. The next nugget of wisdom is this: DON’T STOP COMMUNICATING!!!

The fatal mistake that many people make when they owe money they cannot pay is to avoid, deflect, defer and negate communication. This is the worst thing you can do. As painful as it may seem or be, what you need to do immediately is to initiate contact with the lender, explain the situation and communicate. In many cases, they may have solutions that will allow you to delay or defer a payment, make a partial payment, etc. You won’t know until you COMMUNICATE. And when you communicate, don’t be an idiot. Don’t get belligerent, argumentative, contrary, nasty or mad. The person on the other end of the phone wants a resolution as much as you do. So, be sure to communicate, stay in communication and be professional (humility and kindness go a long way also). As the saying goes, you get more flies with honey than with vinegar. Be nice! I have seen repossessions stopped just because the person on the other end of the phone was willing to work hard to find a solution!

The key with communication is that you need to be pro-active and do communicate as quickly as possible, preferably before the payment is late, that there is a problem so you can assess and entertain any possible solutions.

OK, so, what happens if you are reading this post and unfortunately, you didn’t communicate, you are 3 or 4 months behind on the car note and you have gotten the notice of repossession, what do you do to stop repossession?

COMMUNICATE!!!

Find out what it will take for them to stop repossession procedures and call off the repo man. In many cases, they will work out payment arrangements for the arrearage if you can make a current payment. Again, you won’t know what they can or will do until and unless you COMMUNICATE!

Beyond that, when you know there may be a problem, be pro-active and start working on fast cash generation methods like the ones we cover in the Members Only side of Credit Repair College. Using these methods,  you can begin generating additional cash IMMEDIATELY! It is going to take some cash to get repossession stopped.

No, this isn’t some get rich quick scheme. The methods we describe are methods that we and our clients have used when they found themselves in a jam that they needed to get out. The problem is that most people become paralyzed because they feel that they have no options. That isn’t the case. You just may not know what your options are. Using these methods, you can generate cash quickly and hopefully stop repossession proceedings and get ahead.

And speaking of getting ahead, that should really be the priority with your car payment, house payment and every other recurring expense that you have. Using the methods we describe in the Members Only side of Credit Repair College, you will learn how to effectively do this so you are no longer at the mercy of lenders or your employer.

So, the key to stop repossession is to COMMUNICATE and be PRO-ACTIVE to generate additional cash to bring the car note current.
